In an attempt to test their own anti-satellite missile capabilities, Russia recently shot down one of it’s own satellites in orbit according to U.S. Space Command. However, this decision has put a massive amount of debris in space which could cause life threatening issues for U.S. astronauts currently in space.
According to Fox, the U.S. Space Command claimed that they know about the debris issue and are working to maneuver around the it if U.S. satellites get impacted.
According to Seradata, which operates a launch and satellite database, Russians shot down their own “The Cosmos 1408 satellite” which was launched in 1982 and had been dead for decades.
U.S. officials have said that Russia’s decision to endanger others in space was a reckless and dangerous move and they will not tolerate their decision.
“The debris created by Russia’s DA-ASAT will continue to pose a threat to activities in outer space for years to come, putting satellites and space missions at risk, as well as forcing more collision avoidance maneuvers. Space activities underpin our way of life and this kind of behavior is simply irresponsible,” U.S. Space Command commander Gen. James Dickinson said.
