In news that has made headlines across the world, the country of Austria has now warned their citizens that they will face fines of $16,000 per year if they choose to not get vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus.
According to The Blaze, the Austrian government has become the first government in Europe to announce that they are going to plan a general vaccine mandate on its people.
Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein noted that there would be some exceptions such as pregnant women, people can’t get vaccinated for medical reasons, and those who have recovered from COVID-19 in the past six months.
To keep track of all of this the government is now planning on creating a central vaccination register and will be checked every three months to catch those who are not taking their vaccinations.
Austrian officials have also noted that they will take into account an individuals income when handing out these fines.
Currently nearly 70% of the Austrian public is vaccinated and around 13,000 people in Austria have died since the coronavirus pandemic began on December 12th, 2019.
